The historic Airport House, located in Croydon, has recently been restored to its full former glory using wall ties and expert help from Build-Tech (Midlands), a regular Twitfix customer.

Airport House is an extremely famous London landmark and used to be the city’s original airport - it is from here that pilot Amy Johnson took off at the beginning of her record-busting solo flight to Australia. Along with such a rich history, the building features beautiful original architecture and is a Grade II Listed Building.

Airport House now contains a number of working offices and is also home to the informative London Airport Museum. The building is of block and brick construction, which utilises a skeletal steel frame for support, and has a concrete roof. Since the building was constructed, the concrete roof, piers and parapets has deteriorated to such a damaged state that repair was considered impossible and replacement was specified instead.

Main contractor SSG Contracts Ltd appointed Build-Tech (Midlands) to complete the complex work under the supervision of local architects and engineers. Following a comprehensive inspection & diagnosis of the issue, Build-Tech (Midlands) were able to successfully remove and replace all parapets, as well as the damaged concrete roof panels.

Maintaining the original appearance of the structure is a hugely-important factor when working with period properties and Listed Buildings. Instead of rebuilding the many hollow piers, the company proposed a better solution in the form of Twistfix Wall Ties which, when quickly, simply and safely installed, deliver unparalleled reliability in structural strengthening.

Once the strengthening part of the renovation project was finished Build-Tech (Midlands) were, once again, congratulated for their quality of their expertise, workmanship and selection of top quality materials.

All of the work is now fully completed and Airport House is once again a structure to be admired, from the pleasing visual aesthetic to the strength, robustness and longevity of the refurbishment. We would like to thank Build-Tech (Midlands) for sharing news of their successful projects carried out with the help of Twistfix Wall Ties and other masonry repair products.
